Richard "Dick" Hood

Dear Suzanne, Beverly and Laura and families,
Sooz and I are still trying to digest Dick's passing. It was too fast for me to comprehend and leaves a large hole in all our lives. He was a beautiful intelligent and caring person who grew to be my best friend in life. We have our memories, mine going back 57 years. They will be with us, but are no substitute for him. Our love remains with you.

First I want to express my condolences to Dr. Hood's family. I admit to being stunned to hear that he is gone. I only just today learned about his passing. After being told, I walked out into the lobby of our Signed Language Interpreting Program at the University of New Mexico - and was struck anew at what Dr. Hood had indirectly created. In 1971 he invited me to stop in and teach 'sign language' to his Com. Dis. class

First I want to express my condolences to Dr. Hood's family. I admit to being stunned to hear that he is gone. I only just today learned about his passing. After being told, I walked out into the lobby of our Signed Language Interpreting Program at the University of New Mexico - and was struck anew at what Dr. Hood had indirectly created. In 1971 he invited me to stop in and teach 'sign language' to his Com. Dis. class of 8 students. If he had not made that original gesture, who knows if there would now be this program at UNM with 1,200 students annually learning signed language, each in turn impacting thousands of other people in our community. He has affected the lives of countless people. I am sorry for the family and friends' loss.

I have many fine memories of Dr. Hood from visits with Laura at the Hood home in Albuquerque and from Laura's wedding in Washington, DC. I remember his fondness of Frank Sinatra and wonderful sense of humor. God's blessings,

He was my Graduate Advisor @ UNM and help greatly in "opening doors" for me in the profession after graduation, even in my pursuit of private practice in 1985. He was a good man who taught us a lot, cared for us, and worked tirelessly for the program and its students. Also, he was able to "revive" those around him with precisely timed applications of humor & wit to alleve the

Also, he was able to "revive" those around him with precisely timed applications of humor & wit to alleve the weariness from graduate school enedeavors to endless convention meetings. In school, I asked to borrow his display of middle ear bones for a presentation. He had a hard time finding them, and left one of his "signature" typewritten notes in my box that read: "Ossicles are still missing. Hearing appears to be OK, though!". He will be missed.
